Funding Affordable Family Travel

March 11, 2026

With Spring Break in the air and summer on the horizon, many Americans are saving toward family vacations. The status of international conflict might prompt you to stay closer to home, but even domestic vacations can carry a sizable price tag without proper planning.

If your goal is to book a memorable—but affordable—vacation in 2026, here are four tips that can help you save on costs.

1. Compare flights and book midweek departures. Fare comparison tools like Skyscanner or Google Flights allow you to track when prices drop to your desired locations or uncover cheaper routes. Departing on a Tuesday or Wednesday can be significantly less expensive than flying out on a weekend.

2. Consider alternative accommodations. Booking a hotel in the center of downtown might be convenient, but it can also be costly. Staying outside of tourist centers or opting for a vacation rental can reduce the expense of accommodations. If the weather affords it, camping can help you save even more.

3. Make the most of free activities. A family vacation doesn’t have to be jam-packed with trips to theme parks and shopping sprees. Many scenic spots can be explored by car, bike, or hiking, and parks and museums typically offer family passes or group discounts. Be sure to check local calendars for free concerts or community festivals to entertain your crew as well.

4. Save your money for meals that matter. One of the biggest expenses of family travel can be eating out at restaurants three meals a day. Set a food budget for your trip and reserve your financial resources for special meals that help you experience the local flavor. Otherwise, stock up on snacks, easy breakfast items, and picnic lunch supplies at a nearby grocery store. That’s a benefit of booking a vacational rental—most come with fully stocked kitchens that make it easy to cook meals at ‘home.’

Vacations don’t have to be a splurge on high-end resorts or international cruises. Memories can be made close to home without breaking the bank.
